LAKE OF THE WOODS SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

Groundwater Resources for Lake of the Woods

Groundwater protection is a high priority of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy-Rapid Watershed Management Plans.  Overall, the groundwater resources are well protected and in good shape.  To learn more about the quantity and quality of our regional groundwater, we’ve provided some informational resources below.  The SWCD also is a resource for financial and technical assistance for private landowners. The programs we implement:

Low cost well testing clinic each August

Source of mail-in well testing kits year-round

Abandoned well sealing cost share assistance

Low-interest loans (3%!) for replacing old, degraded wells.

The Minnesota Department of Health has a variety of excellent resources for homeowners on private wells. Visit the MDH webpage “Owner’s Guide to Wells” to get informed!

Head on over to our Abandoned Well Sealing program page to find more information on our cost share program.

Stop in our office to pick up a kit which can be mailed off to a State certified lab.  This kit is good for coliform bacteria, nitrates, lead, arsenic, and iron and hardness.

Lake of the Woods SWCD has assisted with an effort to map the groundwater geology in the County. This “geologic atlas” should be available in 2025 and will be online and free for public use.
